Guatemala typically produces some of the finest coffee available, so it’s exciting when a particular coffee proves capable of going above and beyond these already high expectations. Sourced and roasted by our partners in crime over at Mr. Espresso, the following is their description of the coffee:

Finca La Maravilla, Huehuetenango, Guatemala
If we set out to build the ultimate coffee, we’d start out with an elegant floral aroma, layer in flavors of citrus and chocolate, support it with a heavy, velvety body, and finish with a sweet, lingering aftertaste. We wouldn’t be surprised that it came from a heavenly, high altitude farm nestled in the clouds, and if we tasted it, we’d certainly want to share it with everybody.

Well this is that coffee! Fortunately, Mauricio Rosales and his crew at Finca La Maravilla did most of the hard work for us, and through oak wood roasting we’ve allowed this coffee to reach it’s marvelous potential. La Maravilla translates from Spanish to “The Marvel” and we couldn’t think of a more appropriate name.

Stop by Bryant Street, where this coffee will be featured on the drip coffee rotation, heavily, over the next 3 months, or stop by 101 Montgomery where this coffee is available by the cup on our Kalita Pour-over bar. 8 oz bags of this coffee are available at both locations for $9. Stop by and pick up a cup or a bag of beans, and enjoy!

Coffee Bar’s inaugural Latte Art Throwdown was by all definitions a massive success. From the competitors, to the food vendors, to the sponsors and those who simply participated by drinking great coffee and booze all night long, it was surely a night to be seen.

The rules of the game were simple. In a head-to-head heat, each Barista had two chances to produce their best latte and the crowd favorite moved on until only one Barista was left standing. With a ten foot screen projecting each latte, with DJ Blues on the turntables and a few hundred people in the audience deciding, the results of the Barista Throwdown were clear by night’s end.

On behalf of all the competitors, sponsors and food vendors, Coffee Bar would like to extend a big congratulations to our Barista Throwdown Winner, Maria Romero of Duboce Park Cafe. Maria walked away with prizes donated by each Barista competitor and Coffee Bar and respect from some of the industry’s best and brightest. And with representation from, Awaken Cafe, Blue Bottle, Coffee Bar, Dolores Park Cafe, Duboce Park Cafe, Flying Goat, Local 123, Remedy Coffee, Sightglass, & The Summit and more roasters and cafes in the audience, the competition was fierce.

And for those who didn’t win, Coffee Bar kept their Barista competitors entertained with free beer and a pound of Fair-Trade Certified Coffee roasted to perfection by Mr. Espresso.

Coffee Bar would also like to thank our incredible sponsors, Fair Trade USA, Straus Family Creamery, Mr. Espresso and the Barista Guild of America.

Last, Coffee Bar would like to thank our delicious food vendors, Copper Top Pizza Ovens, Good Foods Catering & Frozen Kuhsterd.

To all those who attended, THANK YOU and see you at the next monthly THROWDOWN. In the meantime, check out more photos of the event here . If you have any photos that you would like to have added, please email them to us at barista@coffeebar-usa.com.

Most of you probably recognize Jacob as one of our long-time employees, but did you know that he is also an artist who runs a successful indie Hip-hop label? And were you aware that his label, Psychokinetics, is getting ready to release its seventh title (and Jacob’s second solo album) Life Well Spent? Well consider yourself to be in the know

Life Well Spent features 14 brilliant tracks with appearances from some of the Bay’s brightest, including Dirt Nasty, Baby Jaymes, and Foreign Legion to name a few. The album is a self-proclaimed “Ode to classic Hip-hop, and a thank-you to the culture that raised me”.

Jacob will be celebrating the album’s release with a party at the Shattuck Down Low in Berkeley on Sept 24th starting at 9:30 pm. The night will include catering by Dragon Rouge of Alameda, fashion giveaways by Artus Clothing, and a live performance of the full album starting promptly at 11 pm.
Founded by a group who enjoy the camaraderie of eating and drinking together, the Bernal Supper Club promotes introducing new friends, experiencing different foods, and experimenting with fun ingredients, all while building a community around the principles of simplicity and sustainability. We are inspired by old world traditions and the importance of seasons. We like functional and realistic things that work. We are never stuffy, always comfortable. Come as strangers, leave as friends….Enjoy!
